We've moved an accountant to macOS and after two weeks they went out and bought an iPhone & Apple Watch to accompany their Mac.
Mac vs Windows total cost of ownership, over five years.
A Mac costs more to buy and less to own, so its five-year total cost of ownership (TCO) comes out lower.

Will our apps work on a Mac?
Almost all of them, and the few Windows-only ones still run on the Mac.
- 1On the Mac, as they areMicrosoft 365 with Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams, Google Workspace, Slack, Zoom, Adobe and 1Password.
- 2In the browserXero, QuickBooks Online, FreeAgent, HubSpot, Salesforce, and Visio for the web.
- 3Windows only, in a windowPower BI Desktop runs in Windows on the Mac, through Parallels Desktop or a Windows 365 Cloud PC, the two options Microsoft lists. Sage 50 Accounts doesn't run on Arm, so it goes in a Windows 365 Cloud PC. We test each one in the free audit.

Apple Business is free, and it replaced Apple Business Manager. It works with any MDM, the software that keeps every Mac managed, and which one fits depends on your size and platforms.
- BoughtOrdered from Apple or your reseller with your Apple Business number.
- Sent to your MDMApple Business hands it to Jamf, Iru, Mosyle, Fleet or Intune before it ships.
- Set up at first sign-inWi-Fi, FileVault, apps and Platform SSO, so one work password opens everything.
- Ready to workAbout 15 minutes after the box is opened.
Honestly, 10 years of managing Macs and Windows across several VC‑backed firms has taught us one thing. Macs are significantly less work to manage than Windows. We'd go as far as saying one person could comfortably manage 10,000 Macs without breaking a sweat.

How much does it cost to switch a company to Mac in the UK?
With Volobyte, setup starts at £2,499 ($3,299, €2,899), and most projects land between £10,000 and £20,000, fixed after a free audit. MDM licences add up to about £10 a Mac a month, and Apple Business's own MDM is free. Over five years a Mac costs about £570 ($760) less to own than a PC.
Is a Mac cheaper than a Windows PC for business?
Over five years, usually. A Mac costs more to buy, but Forrester's study, paid for by Apple, found it about $760 (around £570) cheaper to own per device, with 55% fewer support tickets and about 30% of its value back after four years. It modelled a company of about 7,500 people, so we work out your own figure in the free audit.
Will our Windows apps work on a Mac?
Most will. Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Slack, Zoom and Adobe run on the Mac as they are, and Xero, QuickBooks Online, HubSpot and Salesforce run in the browser. Windows-only apps such as Power BI Desktop run in Windows on the Mac, through Parallels Desktop or a Windows 365 Cloud PC, the two options Microsoft lists. Sage 50 Accounts doesn't run on Arm, so it goes in a Windows 365 Cloud PC. We test each one in the free audit.
Will our team struggle with Macs?
Most people settle in within about a week, because Microsoft 365, Google Workspace and the browser work the same on a Mac. We move people in waves, so nobody loses a working day.
Do Macs have fewer driver problems than Windows PCs?
Generally, yes. Apple makes both the hardware and macOS, so most parts need no extra driver. Newer Mac drivers run outside the system's core, so a bad one is far less likely to crash the Mac, and most printers work through AirPrint with no driver.
Which MDM is best for Mac?
It depends on your size and what you need to prove. Apple Business alone can cover a small team. Mosyle and Iru suit most growing companies, Jamf suits large or complex Apple fleets, Fleet suits engineering teams who want open source, and Intune suits companies all in on Microsoft. We set up and run all of them.
What happened to Apple Business Manager?
Apple replaced Apple Business Manager, Apple Business Essentials and Apple Business Connect with one free service, Apple Business. It still registers every Mac you buy to your company and hands it to your MDM, and it now includes basic device management too.
Can staff log in to their Mac with Okta or Entra ID?
Yes, with Platform SSO. It links the Mac login to Okta or Entra ID. It can be set up during the Mac's first setup, which needs an Apple silicon Mac on macOS 26 and Okta Device Access on Okta, and is documented for Intune on Entra ID. People then use one password, or Touch ID, for the Mac and their apps.
Can we manage Macs and Windows PCs together?
Yes. Macs and the PCs you keep sit side by side under the same rules, with Iru, Fleet or Intune managing the Windows side. If an app only runs on Windows, Parallels or a Windows 365 Cloud PC runs it in a window on the Mac.
How do we secure our startup's Macs?
Every Mac is encrypted with FileVault, updated by a deadline, managed by your MDM and signed in through Okta or Entra ID, so a lost laptop can be locked or wiped from anywhere. That covers the device checks in Cyber Essentials and SOC 2, and in investor due diligence, and we keep the evidence for every Mac.
Who helps UK companies switch from Windows to Mac?
Volobyte, a London IT consultancy, Apple Technical Partner and Okta partner, moves UK startups and scale-ups of 10 to 1,000+ people from Windows to Mac, then manages the Macs. We don't sell Macs. You buy from Apple or a reseller, and we link them to Apple Business. Setup starts at £2,499 ($3,299, €2,899), and a rollout takes 2 to 8 weeks.
