If your fleet is mostly Windows with a handful of Macs and you already pay for Microsoft 365 E3 or E5, Intune is the sensible answer: it is included, and one console is worth a lot. If Macs are the majority, or design and engineering run the business, Jamf pays for itself in same-day Apple support, richer configuration coverage and far less fighting the tooling.

You already pay for it
Intune is included in Microsoft 365 E3 and E5. If the licences are on the invoice already, adding a second MDM is a real cost that needs justifying.
Windows is the majority
Nothing manages Windows better. Autopilot, Defender and Update Rings are tightly integrated and a Mac minority can ride along acceptably.
One compliance model
Device compliance flows straight into Entra Conditional Access without a connector. One policy set covers every platform.
Small Mac footprint
Under roughly twenty Macs with light configuration needs, Intune usually does enough and keeps the console count at one.
When to choose Jamf
Macs are the business
Design, engineering and media teams hit the edges of Intune quickly. Jamf covers the Apple configuration surface properly.
Day-one OS support
Jamf supports new macOS and iOS releases the day they ship. Intune typically lags, which stalls upgrades you cannot postpone.
Patching without add-ons
The Jamf App Catalog keeps third-party Mac apps current. Intune needs extra tooling or scripts to match it.
Serious scripting needs
Custom inventory attributes, smart groups and policy scoping give you automation that is genuinely hard to reproduce in Intune.
Can you run both?
Yes, and plenty of companies do. Intune manages Windows, Jamf manages Apple, and Entra ID holds identity across both. It costs more than one tool but far less than forcing a platform through the wrong console.
The trap is running both on the same devices. Two MDM profiles on one Mac produces conflicting configuration and a support experience nobody enjoys. Split by platform, not by team.
Where the split works, Jamf Connect or Platform SSO ties the Mac login to Entra ID, so users get one identity even though two consoles sit behind it.
What we see in practice
The honest dividing line is fleet composition, not preference. Below roughly twenty Macs in a Microsoft-heavy company, Intune is usually the pragmatic answer. Above that, the hours lost to workarounds outgrow the Jamf licence.
The second factor is how fast you need to adopt new Apple releases. Regulated teams that must patch quickly, or engineering teams that upgrade early, feel Intune lag every autumn.
Migration between the two is routine. Rebuilding policies, not moving devices, is the work. Expect two to six weeks depending on how much bespoke configuration exists.
